Overview:

The Desert Rose, scientifically known as Adenium obesum, is a stunning succulent known for its vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers and its thick, swollen trunk (caudex). This plant is highly prized for its unique appearance and long-lasting blooms, making it a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor cultivation in warm climates.

Key Features:

  • Beautiful, trumpet-shaped flowers in various colors
  • Thick, swollen trunk that stores water
  • Can be shaped and pruned into bonsai forms

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ensure it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering.

Watering: Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.

Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Adding sand or perlite can improve drainage.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C). Can tolerate higher temperatures but should be protected from frost and cold drafts. Prefers dry to moderate humidity.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the winter.

Pruning: Prune to shape the plant and encourage branching. Remove any dead or damaged branches. Pruning can also help manage the size of the plant.

Pests & Diseases: Watch for pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure proper watering to prevent root rot.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 3-5 feet outdoors; 1-3 feet indoors
  • Mature Spread: 2-4 feet
  • Growth Rate: Slow to medium

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, sunny patios, or as a striking bonsai specimen. Its unique trunk and vibrant flowers make it a focal point in any collection.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to the arid regions of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Handle with care and keep out of reach of children and pets.
