Overview:

The Bird of Paradise, scientifically known as Strelitzia reginae, is a stunning tropical plant famed for its striking, bird-like flowers and large, banana-shaped leaves. This plant brings an exotic touch to gardens and indoor spaces with its vibrant colors and unique flower structure. Known for its beauty and elegance, the Bird of Paradise is a favorite among plant enthusiasts and landscapers.

Key Features:

  • Striking, bird-like orange and blue flowers
  • Large, banana-shaped green leaves
  • Adds an exotic, tropical touch to any setting

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, direct light to partial shade. Full sun encourages the best flowering. Indoors, place near a sunny window where it can receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in winter, allowing the soil to dry out more between waterings.

Soil: Well-draining, rich soil. A mix containing peat moss, sand, and loam works well. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65-70°F (18-21°C). Prefers high humidity but can adapt to average indoor humidity levels. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain appearance. Pruning is generally not necessary for flowering but can help manage the plant's size and shape.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract spider mites, aphids, and scale. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Ensure proper watering and good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 3-6 feet (indoors), up to 6-8 feet (outdoors)
  • Mature Spread: 3-4 feet
  • Growth Rate: Slow to medium

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration as a striking focal point in living rooms, sunrooms, or offices. Also perfect for outdoor gardens in warm climates, where it can be used in borders, containers, or as a statement plant.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to South Africa.
