Overview:

The Broken Heart plant, scientifically known as Monstera adansonii, is a captivating tropical plant known for its unique, perforated leaves. The heart-shaped leaves with distinctive holes give it an eye-catching appearance, making it a popular choice for indoor plant enthusiasts. This plant is also commonly referred to as the Swiss Cheese Vine due to its unique foliage.

Key Features:

  • Heart-shaped leaves with distinctive holes
  • Fast-growing and vining habit
  • Easy to care for and train on a trellis or moss pole

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light conditions but will grow more slowly and produce fewer perforations. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Water thoroughly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in winter.

Soil: Well-draining potting mix. A mix containing peat and perlite works well.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) and prefers high humidity. Regular misting or a humidifier can help maintain humidity levels.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in winter.

Pruning: Prune to control size and shape, and to encourage bushier growth. Remove yellow or dead leaves as needed.

Pests & Diseases: Susceptible to common houseplant pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Proper watering and humidity can prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 3-8 feet indoors (with support)
  • Mature Spread: 1-3 feet
  • Growth Rate: Fast

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly in hanging baskets or trained to climb a trellis or moss pole. Its unique foliage adds a tropical feel to any room.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to Central and South America.

Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Fun fact: The holes in the leaves of the Monstera adansonii are believed to help the plant withstand heavy rains and wind in its native tropical habitat, allowing water and air to pass through more easily.

Pot: The actual pot may vary from the product image.
