Overview:

The Bunny Ear Cactus, scientifically known as Opuntia microdasys, is a charming and popular cactus recognized for its distinctive, pad-like segments that resemble bunny ears. These pads are covered with tiny, hair-like spines called glochids, which can be quite prickly. This cactus is an excellent choice for adding a touch of desert beauty to any indoor or outdoor plant collection.

Key Features:

  • Pad-like segments resembling bunny ears
  • Covered with tiny, hair-like spines called glochids
  • Compact and attractive growth habit

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. Ensure it receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth. Can tolerate some light shade but thrives best in full sun.

Watering: Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.

Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Adding sand or perlite can improve drainage.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 70-100°F (21-38°C). Can tolerate temperatures as low as 50°F (10°C). Prefers dry conditions and is well-suited to arid climates.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary. Remove any dead or damaged pads as needed with clean, sharp tools.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract mealybugs and spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Proper watering and good air circulation can help prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 12-24 inches
  • Mature Spread: 12-24 inches
  • Growth Rate: Slow to medium

Usage: Ideal for indoor and outdoor decoration. Perfect for sunny windowsills, desert-themed gardens, or as part of a succulent arrangement. Its unique appearance makes it a standout plant in any collection.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to central and northern Mexico.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets and humans, but the glochids can cause skin irritation. Handle with care and use gloves when handling the plant.

Fun fact: The Bunny Ear Cactus produces small, yellow flowers in the spring and summer, followed by red, pear-shaped fruits. The glochids on the pads are very fine and can easily detach, so it's best to handle this cactus with caution.

Pot: The actual pot may vary from the product image.
