Overview: Notocactus rutilans, now reclassified as Parodia rutilans, is a charming and attractive cactus known for its bright yellow flowers and ribbed, spherical shape. This small, easy-to-care-for cactus adds a touch of desert beauty to any plant collection and is particularly popular for its vibrant blooms and striking appearance.

Key Features:

  • Spherical, ribbed shape
  • Bright yellow flowers
  • Small and easy to care for

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. Ensure it receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth. Can tolerate some light shade but thrives best in full sun.

Watering: Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.

Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Adding sand or perlite can improve drainage.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C). Can tolerate temperatures as low as 50°F (10°C) but should be protected from frost. Prefers dry conditions.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary. Remove any dead or damaged parts as needed with clean, sharp tools.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract mealybugs and spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Proper watering and good air circulation can help prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 4-6 inches
  • Mature Spread: 3-4 inches
  • Growth Rate: Slow

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly in sunny spots such as windowsills or desks. Its compact size and bright flowers make it a great addition to succulent arrangements and small garden displays.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to South America, particularly Brazil and Uruguay.
