Overview:

The Indian Christmas Tree, scientifically known as Araucaria heterophylla, is commonly referred to as the Norfolk Island Pine. Despite its common name, this plant is not a true pine but is prized for its symmetrical, whorled branches and soft, needle-like leaves. It is often used as a living Christmas tree in India and other warm climates due to its elegant, festive appearance.

Key Features:

  • Symmetrical, whorled branches
  • Soft, needle-like, green leaves
  • Attractive, conical shape

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. It can also adapt to low light but may grow more slowly.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in winter but do not let the soil dry out completely.

Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. A mix with peat moss, sand, and perlite works well.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60-75°F (16-24°C). Prefers moderate to high humidity. Regular misting or using a humidifier can help maintain humidity levels, especially in dry environments.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary, but you can trim any dead or yellowing branches to maintain appearance. Avoid cutting the top of the plant to preserve its natural shape.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract spider mites, scale, or mealybugs. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Ensure proper watering and good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 3-6 feet indoors (can grow much taller outdoors in suitable climates)
  • Mature Spread: 2-4 feet
  • Growth Rate: Slow to medium

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly during the holiday season as a living Christmas tree. Its symmetrical shape and attractive foliage make it a year-round ornamental plant. It can be placed in living rooms, offices, or entryways to add a touch of greenery.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to Norfolk Island, near Australia.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets and humans.

Fun fact: The Norfolk Island Pine can live for many years and grow into a large, majestic tree if planted outdoors in suitable climates. It is often used as a living Christmas tree due to its festive appearance and ability to be decorated like a traditional pine tree.

Pot: The actual pot may vary from the product image.
