Overview: The Crown of Thorns is a resilient, flowering succulent known for its vibrant blooms and spiky stems. It is often grown as a houseplant or in outdoor gardens in warm climates.

Key Features:

  • Thorny stems that can grow quite long and spiny
  • Bright, colorful bracts surrounding small, inconspicuous flowers
  • Flowers can be red, pink, yellow, or white

Care Guide:

  • Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may produce fewer flowers.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Can tolerate higher temperatures but should be protected from frost. Prefers low to moderate humidity.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) every 2-4 weeks.
  • Pruning: Prune to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged stems. Wear gloves to protect from thorns and sap.
  • Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests, but watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: Typically 3-6 feet (90-180 cm) indoors, can grow taller in the wild
  • Mature Spread: Can spread up to 2-3 feet (60-90 cm)
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate growth rate

Usage:

  • Ideal for indoor containers, patios, and garden borders
  • Suitable for xeriscaping and drought-tolerant landscapes
  • Can be used as a living fence or barrier due to its thorny nature

Additional Information:

  • Origin: Native to Madagascar
  • Toxicity: Sap is toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation. Handle with care and keep away from pets and children.
  • Fun fact: According to legend, the Crown of Thorns was named because it was believed to be the plant used to make the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ during his crucifixion.
