Overview:

The Fittonia, commonly known as the Nerve Plant, is a striking tropical plant known for its vibrant red leaves with contrasting green veins. This low-growing plant adds a touch of intricate beauty to any indoor space and is prized for its decorative foliage.

Key Features:

  • Vibrant red leaves with contrasting green veins
  • Compact, low-growing habit
  • Excellent for terrariums and small spaces

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate low light conditions but the leaf colors may become less vibrant. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Fittonia prefers high humidity and frequent watering. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as this can cause the leaves to wilt.

Soil: Well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A mix with peat moss, perlite, or vermiculite works well.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C) and prefers high humidity. Regular misting or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles and water can help maintain humidity levels.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Prune to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Pinch back the growing tips to promote branching.

Pests & Diseases: Watch for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Proper watering and high humidity can prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 3-6 inches
  • Mature Spread: 12-18 inches
  • Growth Rate: Slow to medium

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly in terrariums, small pots, or as a ground cover in larger planters. Its vibrant foliage makes it a great addition to desks, tabletops, and shelves.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Peru.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets and humans.

Fun fact: Fittonia is named after Elizabeth and Sarah Mary Fitton, two Irish sisters who wrote about botany in the 19th century. The intricate vein patterns on the leaves give it the common name "Nerve Plant."

Pot: The actual pot may vary from the product image.
