Overview:

The Heart Hoya, scientifically known as Hoya kerrii and commonly referred to as the Sweetheart Plant, is a charming and unique houseplant known for its heart-shaped leaves. This slow-growing succulent is popular as a gift on Valentine's Day due to its distinctive foliage. Native to Southeast Asia, the Heart Hoya is easy to care for and can be grown as a single leaf or as a vining plant.

Key Features:

  • Distinctive heart-shaped leaves
  • Thick, succulent foliage
  • Slow-growing, vining habit

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Low light conditions may slow growth.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, ensuring the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in winter.

Soil: Well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix. Adding sand or perlite can improve drainage.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Can tolerate lower temperatures down to 50°F (10°C) but should be protected from frost. Prefers moderate humidity but can adapt to average indoor humidity levels.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary. Remove any dead or damaged leaves as needed. If growing as a vine, you can trim to control the size and encourage bushier growth.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Proper watering and good air circulation can help prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 6-12 inches (as a single leaf) or up to 10 feet (as a vining plant)
  • Mature Spread: 6-12 inches (as a single leaf) or up to several feet (as a vine)
  • Growth Rate: Slow

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly in small pots as a single leaf for tabletops, desks, and windowsills. When grown as a vine, it can be trained to climb trellises or allowed to trail from hanging baskets. Its heart-shaped leaves make it a perfect gift for special occasions like Valentine's Day.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Laos.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets and humans.

Fun fact: The Heart Hoya can live for many years, and when grown as a vine, it can eventually produce clusters of small, fragrant, star-shaped flowers. However, flowering is rare when the plant is grown as a single leaf.

Pot: The actual pot may vary from the product image.
