Overview: Hens and Chicks, also known as Houseleeks, are hardy, evergreen succulents popular for their rosette formations and ability to thrive in various conditions. They are known for producing "chicks" or offsets that cluster around the mother rosette ("hen").
Key Features:
- Rosette-shaped clusters of fleshy, pointed leaves
- Leaves vary in color from green to reddish-purple
- Produces small, star-shaped flowers on tall stalks during summer
Care Guide:
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Too much shade can cause the rosettes to become leggy.
- Watering: Drought-tolerant. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Can tolerate poor soil conditions.
- Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Can tolerate frost and survives in temperatures as low as -30°F (-34°C). Prefers low humidity environments.
- Fertilization: Generally does not require fertilization. If desired, use a balanced, diluted fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) sparingly.
- Pruning: Remove dead or dying rosettes and spent flower stalks to maintain a neat appearance.
- Pests & Diseases: Resistant to most pests, but watch for aphids and mealybugs. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
Size & Growth:
- Mature Height: Typically 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) for rosettes, with flower stalks reaching up to 12 inches (30 cm)
- Mature Spread: Can spread up to 24 inches (60 cm) as it produces offsets
- Growth Rate: Fast-growing, producing multiple offsets annually
Usage:
- Ideal for rock gardens, container gardens, and ground cover
- Suitable for green roofs and xeriscaping
- Can be used in crevices of stone walls or as edging in garden beds
Additional Information:
- Origin: Native to mountainous regions of southern Europe
- Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets
- Fun fact: The name "Sempervivum" means "always alive" in Latin, referring to the plant's hardiness and ability to thrive in harsh conditions.
- Pot: The actual pot may vary from the product image.
