Overview:

The Hoya Carnosa, commonly known as the Wax Plant, is a popular and resilient houseplant celebrated for its thick, waxy leaves and clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers. Native to Southeast Asia and Australia, this trailing or climbing plant is known for its low maintenance requirements and long lifespan, making it a favorite among indoor gardeners.

Key Features:

  • Thick, glossy, waxy leaves
  • Clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers
  • Trailing or climbing growth habit

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Low light conditions may reduce flowering.

Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently, ensuring the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in winter when the plant's growth slows.

Soil: Well-draining potting mix. A mix with peat moss, perlite, or sand works well. Hoya Carnosa can also thrive in orchid mix due to its epiphytic nature.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C). Can tolerate lower temperatures down to 50°F (10°C) but should be protected from frost. Prefers moderate humidity but can adapt to average indoor humidity levels.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Prune to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged leaves. Avoid cutting the flower peduncles, as new flowers often emerge from the same spot.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Proper watering and good air circulation can help prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 2-4 feet (as a trailing or climbing plant)
  • Mature Spread: 2-4 feet
  • Growth Rate: Slow to medium

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly in hanging baskets or as a trailing plant on shelves. Its fragrant flowers and attractive foliage make it a great addition to living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. The Hoya Carnosa can also be trained to climb trellises or supports.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to Southeast Asia and Australia.
