Overview:

Jasminum sambac, commonly known as Mogra or Arabian Jasmine, is a highly fragrant flowering plant native to Southeast Asia. Known for its beautiful, pure white flowers and glossy green leaves, this evergreen shrub is celebrated for its intense, sweet fragrance. The flowers are often used in perfumes, teas, and traditional ceremonies.

Key Features:

  • Pure white, highly fragrant flowers
  • Glossy, dark green leaves
  • Evergreen shrub

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ensure it receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal flowering. It can tolerate some shade but may produce fewer flowers.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during the growing season. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil. A mix rich in organic matter, such as compost, works well. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm, humid climates. Prefers temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). Protect from frost and cold drafts. Regular misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain humidity levels.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a fertilizer high in phosphorus to promote blooming.

Pruning: Prune after the flowering period to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove dead or diseased branches as needed. Pruning also helps to promote more blooms.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Ensure good air circulation and proper watering to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 3-6 feet
  • Mature Spread: 3-6 feet
  • Growth Rate: Medium to fast

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration in bright, sunny spots, or as an ornamental shrub in gardens and landscapes. The fragrant flowers are perfect for creating garlands, floral arrangements, and for use in teas and perfumes.
