Overview:

Kamini, scientifically known as Murraya paniculata, also known as Orange Jasmine, is a charming evergreen shrub renowned for its fragrant, white flowers and glossy green leaves. This plant is native to South and Southeast Asia and is widely appreciated for its compact form and sweet, citrus-like fragrance. Kamini is a versatile plant that can be used for hedges, borders, or as a standalone ornamental shrub.

Key Features:

  • Fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers
  • Glossy, dark green, pinnate leaves
  • Compact, evergreen shrub

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For best flowering, ensure it receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. It can tolerate some shade but may produce fewer flowers.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during the growing season. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.

Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil. A mix rich in organic matter, such as compost, works well. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm, humid climates. Prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect from frost and cold drafts. Can be grown indoors in containers in cooler climates.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and midsummer. Regular fertilization promotes healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Pruning: Prune after the flowering period to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove dead or diseased branches as needed. Pruning can also help control the size of the plant.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Ensure proper watering and good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 6-12 feet (can be kept smaller with pruning)
  • Mature Spread: 4-6 feet
  • Growth Rate: Medium to fast

Usage: Ideal for hedges, borders, and as an ornamental shrub in gardens and landscapes. Its fragrant flowers make it a delightful addition near patios, walkways, or windows where the scent can be enjoyed. Kamini can also be grown in containers for indoor use.
