Overview:

The Moon Cactus, scientifically known as Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, is a unique and colorful cactus that is often grafted onto a different cactus species, such as Hylocereus. The vibrant colors, ranging from red, yellow, pink, and orange, make it a popular choice for adding a splash of color to indoor plant collections. Its small size and striking appearance make it an eye-catching and decorative houseplant.

Key Features:

  • Brightly colored top cactus, often red, yellow, pink, or orange
  • Grafted onto a green base cactus
  • Small, compact size

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the colorful top cactus. Too little light can cause the colors to fade.

Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering, as the Moon Cactus is susceptible to root rot. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Adding sand or perlite can improve drainage.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Prefers dry to moderate humidity.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary. Remove any dead or damaged parts of the base cactus as needed.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Proper watering and good air circulation can help prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 2-4 inches
  • Mature Spread: 2-3 inches
  • Growth Rate: Slow

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly in small spaces such as desks, windowsills, or as part of a succulent arrangement. Its vibrant colors and compact size make it a great addition to any plant collection.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to South America, particularly Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and Bolivia.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets and humans.

Fun fact: The colorful top of the Moon Cactus lacks chlorophyll, which is why it is grafted onto a green base cactus that provides the necessary nutrients for its survival. This unique combination results in a striking and visually appealing plant.

Pot: The actual pot may vary from the product image.
