Overview:
The Neem Tree, also known as Azadirachta indica, is a fast-growing, evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent. Known for its medicinal properties and environmental benefits, the Neem Tree is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions.
Key Features:
- Pinnate leaves with serrated edges
- Small, white, fragrant flowers
- Produces olive-like fruits containing seeds rich in neem oil
Care Guide:
- Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Ensure it receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
- Watering: Drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly during the first year to help establish the roots. Thereafter, water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil. Can tolerate poor and rocky soils but performs best in fertile conditions.
- Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C). Can tolerate temperatures as low as 40°F (4°C) but should be protected from frost. Prefers low to moderate humidity.
- Fertilization: Feed with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) every 6-8 weeks. Neem trees generally do not require much fertilizer.
- Pruning: Prune to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. Regular pruning helps maintain a manageable size and promotes healthy growth.
- Pests & Diseases: Generally pest-resistant due to its natural insecticidal properties. However, young trees may be susceptible to spider mites, aphids, and scale. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
Size & Growth:
- Mature Height: Typically 30-50 feet (9-15 meters) tall but can grow up to 100 feet (30 meters) in ideal conditions
- Mature Spread: Can spread up to 20-30 feet (6-9 meters)
- Growth Rate: Fast growth rate, especially in the first few years
Usage:
- Ideal for reforestation, windbreaks, and shade
- Widely used in traditional medicine, agriculture, and cosmetics
- Can be planted as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks
Additional Information:
- Origin: Native to India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal
- Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets. Neem oil, extracted from the seeds, is used as a natural pesticide and has medicinal properties but should be used with caution.
