Overview:

The White Poinsettia, scientifically known as Euphorbia pulcherrima, is a stunning variant of the classic holiday plant. Known for its elegant white bracts and dark green foliage, the White Poinsettia adds a sophisticated and festive touch to any indoor space. Perfect for holiday decorations, this plant can be enjoyed throughout the winter season with proper care.

Key Features:

  • Elegant white bracts surrounding small yellow flowers
  • Dark green, oval-shaped leaves
  • Iconic holiday plant, especially popular during Christmas

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may cause the bracts to fade.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in winter but do not let the soil dry out completely.

Soil: Well-draining potting mix. A mix with peat moss, perlite, or sand works well.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60-70°F (15-21°C). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Prefers moderate humidity. If indoor air is dry, occasional misting can help maintain humidity.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Fertilization can be reduced or stopped in winter.

Pruning: Prune after the blooming period to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking its best. Pinching back the stems can promote a bushier plant.

Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract whiteflies, spider mites, and mealybugs. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Proper watering and good air circulation can help prevent fungal issues.

Size & Growth:

  • Mature Height: 1-3 feet
  • Mature Spread: 1-2 feet
  • Growth Rate: Medium

Usage: Ideal for indoor decoration, particularly during the holiday season. Can be used as a centerpiece, on windowsills, or as part of festive displays. Its elegant white bracts and green foliage make it a focal point in any room.

Additional Information:

Origin: Native to Mexico and Central America.

Toxicity: Mildly toxic to pets and humans if ingested, causing mild stomach irritation. The milky sap can cause skin irritation. Handle with care and keep out of reach of children and pets.

Fun fact: The Poinsettia was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the United States in the 1820s. In its native habitat, the Poinsettia can grow into a large shrub or small tree.
